Beebe Medical Foundation Joshua M. Freeman Center for Physical Therapy

In April 2008 The Carl M. Freeman Foundation awarded a $250,000 gift to Beebe Medical Foundation.  The grant will support plans for the construction of a new Sussex County Campus and will honor Joshua M. Freeman and his committment to wellness with the Joshua M. Freeman Center for Physical Therapy. 

Joshua M. Freeman Youth Initiative

To honor Joshua M. Freeman and celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Carl M. Freeman Companies, the Carl M. Freeman Foundation awarded the $260,000 Joshua M. Freeman tribute grant to Olney-based PROJECT CHANGE.  The grant will fund the Joshua M. Freeman Youth Initiative, a youth philanthropy and community service program, and will also allow PROJECT CHANGE to establish a teen center in the Olney area.

Joshua M. Freeman Center for Athletic Achievement

Josh was an alumnus of the Landon School in Bethesda, MD and was passionate about sports. He recognized the great role physical activity and achievement can play in anyone’s life. The Carl M. Freeman Foundation has donated $2,000,000 to construct this state-of-the-art fitness facility and honor the legacy of Josh Freeman.

South Coastal Library Joshua M. Freeman Cultural Center

The Carl M. Freeman Foundation has donated $250,000 toward the capital campaign of the Friends of the South Coastal Library in Sussex County, DE. This donation will be applied toward the development of the Joshua M. Freeman Cultural Center, a venue that will provide space for cultural opportunities to visitors and residents of Lower Sussex County.

Hospice Caring Opportunity Grant

In 2005, the Carl M. Freeman Foundation awarded a one-time “opportunity grant” of $100,000 to Hospice Caring in Montgomery County, MD. This grant funded the renovation of “The Cottage”, a meeting place for Hospice Caring bereavement groups, book discussion groups, retreats, monthly caregiver teas, and staff and board meetings.

Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland

The Carl M. Freeman Foundation awarded over $100,000 to the capital campaign of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland. The Clarice Smith Center is now home to six performance spaces as well as a number of rehearsal venues and classrooms. It showcases a variety of arts performances and educational opportunities for students at the University of Maryland as well as the broader community.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington

The Carl M. Freeman Foundation has been a major supporter of The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington for over 4 decades. Over the years we have awarded more than $2 million to support community building and improvement projects.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was awarded several grants to help them in their mission to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. The Carl M. Freeman Foundation has contributed nearly $100,000 to support their mission and help children suffering from the disease and its devastating complications.

Montgomery College Foundation

The Carl M. Freeman Foundation has been a longstanding supporter of the Montgomery College Foundation with collective grant awards over $100,000. Funds have gone to support both the humanities and the Macklin Business Institute, showcasing the Foundation’s commitment to quality affordable education. 

Olney Boys and Girls Community Sports Association

In 1999, Joshua Freeman and The Carl M. Freeman Foundation joined with the Olney Boys and Girls Community Sports Club in their collective vision to bring additional youth recreational facilities to the Olney Community. Freeman Fields is named in memory of Carl M. Freeman and his commitment to investing in the future of our children and the quality of life for our community. 

The Olney Theatre

Carl M. Freeman was a long-standing supporter of the Olney Theatre and its efforts to bring arts to the Olney community. The Foundation has supported The Olney Theatre with both money and time for decades, beginning with Mr. Freeman’s participation on the original Olney Theatre board of directors. Today, the Olney Theatre is the home of the Carl M. Freeman Auditorium.

Venture Philanthropy Partners


Since the creation of Venture Philanthropy Partners (VPP) in 2000, the Carl M. Freeman Foundation has been a large contributor to the philanthropic investment organization. Joshua Freeman, then the Chair of the Carl M. Freeman Foundation, joined VPP as a founding investor in 2000 and the Foundation has worked closely with VPP since then to assist nonprofit organizations serving children across the Washington DC area.
